With the decrease of marijuana and alcohol use, the abuse of painkillers such as Vicodin and Oxycontin has increased in teens, according to a new report.
In U.S. improvement has been seen in many drug uses since late ’90s, but from last two years the down ward trend has stopped.
“In this need of the hour we have to put our maximum efforts, because although there have been improvements, but still the rates are higher with respect to international standards, and it’s the matter of the prime concern in terms of the risk to the health of our community in the long run,” Dr Wilson M. Compton said.
Report mentioned the use of prescription painkillers among adolescence remains high, with some 10 percent of seniors saying they used Vicodin and 4.7 percent said they used Oxycontin in the past year.

Trasylol is a drug that is used to control bleeding in patients going through cardiac surgical procedure, but a new study is doubtful about the safety of that drug.
In 2007, Trastoyl was removed from the market in the US, as it was the subject of controversy there.
In their study, researchers from Australia and Canada reviewed data received from 48 clinical trials. The researchers found that the patients who were given Trasylol had a higher death risk than the patients who were given other anti-bleeding drugs known as lysine analogues.

A review of existing data shows that people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have no help with some well-known inhalers to improve their life spans.
Contrarily, they may increase the risk of pneumonia (one of the biggest killers in the US) in these patients.
However, without doctor’s recommendation, patients with COPD must not avoid using these inhalers as these devices prove beneficial in a number of cases, said Dr. M. Bradley Drummond, the lead author of the review.
Dr. Drummond, who is a fellow at the pulmonary and critical care medicine division at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, says: “Aside from well-known benefits, there are some possible risks and the review is about balancing them.”
The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Nov.26 issue.

It’s an often expressed idea about medicine that if you have high blood pressure, the steps you take to lower it will have a dramatic impact on your risk for heart disease, stroke and more.
But a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study says that almost 70 percent people with high blood pressure are not doing enough to control it.
Dr. Keith Siller, who is medical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City, says: “High blood has links with stroke and heart disease, it’s a treatable and preventable condition, but unfortunately majority of people are not doing a good job for controlling it.”

According to an estimate, almost half of US teens try marijuana before finishing high school. It badly affects school performance as well as sports and its long term use may lead to addiction. During 2002, more than a quarter million individuals opted for a drug rehab program and reported marijuana as their chief drug of abuse.
Though there are a lot of drug rehabilitation programs offerings in the centers throughout the country, only a few treatment programs have been specifically geared for marijuana abusers. The basic purpose of a teen drug rehab program is abstaining teenagers from drug abuse. These programs help teenagers to become productive and overcome the withdrawal symptoms and health effects of the drug. Teenagers are constantly undergoing physical and mental changes and that’s why they are quite unique in that. Some teenagers have legal issues and they may have a compulsory drug rehab program. The thing that is considered quite important is relationships with family, friends and the community. Just like other rehab programs, a complete medical and psychiatric evaluation is made.

Salvia divinorum, also known as Diviner’s Sage, Sage of the Seers, or simply by the genus name, Salvia is a psychoactive herb which can induce strong dissociative effects. It is a member of the sage genus and the mint family. The Latin name Salvia divinorum literally translates to “sage of the seers.” This cultivated Mexican mint species has a long history of use by the Mazatecs.
Its primary psychoactive constituent is a diterpenoid known as salvinorin A, which is a potent ?-opioid receptor agonist. Salvinorin A is unique in that it is the only naturally occurring substance known to induce a visionary state this way. This herb can be chewed, smoked, or taken as a tincture to produce experiences ranging from uncontrollable laughter to much more intense and profoundly altered states.
Mechanism
The duration of effects is much shorter than that of other, more well-known psychedelics is the effects of smoked salvia usually last for only a few minutes. The most commonly reported after-effects include an increased feeling of insight, an improved mood, a sense of calmness, and an increased sense of connection with nature, much less often, it may also cause dysphoria.
