A recent study in Chicago has shown that in fact disease prevention and the obsessions over them have proved to be costlier than curing the diseases itself. People today are more concentrated on prevention of diseases having seen others who have gone that path.

But seldom has it proven to be true that the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound”, has come to be effective. There are more cases now where the actual disease treatment has cost less in a person’s life than a person who has spent most of his or her life taking means and measures of preventing the disease.

Of course this does not mean that one foregoes healthcare, exercise and supplementing but it goes on to prove that obsessing over preventing a disease effectively will only rip one off of money than what may actually cost to cure the disease. Having said that it comes to be quite a lot of money! So health bills come to be on the rise whether someone is at high risk of catching any disease or not!

So when observed the programs that people participate in, whether they are in any program for curing a disease or preventing a diseases, it has been found that the latter group definitely ends up spending more.

Almost 75 percent patients hospitalized for cardiac arrest showed normal cholesterol levels, far away from the risk of cardiovascular trouble, a nationwide study reported.

The finding indicate towards the need to change the current threshold value of the cholesterol level, said study author Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow

“The LDL cholesterol level at which people have heart attacks shouldn’t be considered as normal,” Fonarow said. Yardstick

LDL cholesterol, in other words “bad” cholesterol, accumulates to form plaques that ultimately block arteries. Values evaluated by U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute are 130 milligrams per deciliter for healthy people and 70 milligram per deciliter for those who have high risk factors such as obesity, smoking and hypertension and diabetes.

But the collected data of 137,000 cardiac arrest patients, from 2000 to 2006, showed that, about three-quarter had bad cholesterol level below 130 at the time of hospitalization, while 17.6 percent had LDL levels below 70.

“With LDL levels from 100 to 130, people may feel risk free,” Fonarow said. “In this study, there was nothing normal about having an LDL reading of 100.”

Cholesterol is only one aspect in heart attack, Fonarow said. Risk increase with age, especially for males and who have had a family history.

“The positive thing is that, 80 percent of the risk factors are controllable,” Fonarow said. “We can’t change our family history, age or sex, but what we can do is to keep our blood pressure low, exercise and change our lifestyle in that way which has minimum risks.”

The conversation between physicians and adolescents about health behaviors is very poor, far away from the recommendations, study concluded.

“Preventive measure is the most important part of quality primary care for adolescents,” Dr. Sally Adams said. Most of the diseases, which cause death in adolescents, can be prevented. In addition, “the health and lifestyle behaviors established during youth have long-lasting health effects through out the entire lifespan,” the researchers indicated.

Strategies have already been made by national agencies and professional organizations that recommend “all adolescents must have a confidential visit annually in which primary doctor screen and counsel teenagers’ for multiple risk behaviors.”

The researchers review the 2003 California Health Survey to inspect coverage of preventive measures during usual medical care for 2,192 patients from 12 and 17 years of age, who had a physical check up within the previous 6 months.

Youngsters reported if they talked about tobacco, alcohol, addictive drugs, seatbelt use, helmet use, protected sex, violence, physical work out and nutrition.

The whole statistics showed that, discussions about health matters ranged from 15 percent and 76 percent for nutrition and exercise. Adolescents discussed safety more than the violence and STDs in comparison with their older peers.

Lower-income and uninsured youngsters reported more discussion about health topics than higher-income and insured groups.

Researchers noted that it is quite common in pediatric clinicians “that they lack the skills needed to discuss sensitive health issues, so much of our work has concentrated on training programs that increase clinicians’ confidence to talk with adolescents in more comfortable atmosphere.”

If you are also suffering from gestational diabetes during pregnancy, some lifestyle changes can prove helpful to decrease your risk of becoming the victim of type2 diabetes later in life. Here are some tips that can prove helpful in this connection:

Don’t allow your body weight to rule you and your body. If you have 20% more weight than what is considered ideal for the body, you have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. If you succeed to shed few pounds, it may decrease your risk of developing type2 diabetes.

Take low-fat diets

Consume vegetables, fresh fruits as much as you can

Take exercise daily as it helps body to burn glucose without requiring some extra insulin.

But a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study says that almost 70 percent people with high blood pressure are not doing enough to control it.

Dr. Keith Siller, who is medical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City, says: “High blood has links with stroke and heart disease, it’s a treatable and preventable condition, but unfortunately majority of people are not doing a good job for controlling it.”

Almost every one out of three US adults is suffering from high blood pressure and according to the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a reading above 140/90 mmHg is considered high blood pressure while anything between 120/80 mmHg and 139/89 mmHg is considered pre-hypertension.

Exercise, blood-pressure lowering medications and diet serve as mainstays for blood pressure management and to control their blood pressure a lot of people have to take a combination of medications.

The US government researchers interviewed 25,000 Americans with high blood pressure to find what measures they had been taking to control their high blood pressure. Almost 98 percent (almost all) told that they had been doing at least one thing to lower their blood pressure. While only 31 percent had their high blood pressure under control.

Scientist has discovered an antibody that breaks down and suppresses an appetite stimulant that is produced by the human body.

Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute told that the antibody catalyst, GHT-11E11 became the cause to increase the metabolic rate in fasting mice and restricted their eating after 24 hours without food.

A gastric hormone gherlin, which promotes weight gain and fat storage through metabolic actions, is counteracted by the antibody. The substance is released by the body to boost eating during calorie restriction.

The findings have been published in the online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Our findings show that this new catalytic antibody can seek out and degrade gherlin,” said Kim Janda , who was one of the lead authors of the study.

As obesity has a complex nature that’s why any antibody-based treatment is likely to be combined with different weight-loss strategies like nutritional, medicinal, educational, exercise and psychosocial components. However, Janda said that more research was needed to better know the effect of the antibodies over the long-term and other issues.

A recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that almost 1 billion people worldwide are suffering from obesity or overweight and most of them belong to the developed world.

The answer is it’s our daily eating habits that cause most weight gain, rather than individual episodes of binge-eating. The same principle applies to exercise and fitness. A modest amount of daily exercise is more effective and sustainable than occasional vigorous workouts.

Medical experts recommend small regular calorie-saving approach to weight management. They emphasize the value of aiming for small but realizable weight loss goals.

Phenomenon

Weight gain or weight loss is determined in terms of calories. If you burn as many calories as you take in each day, there’s nothing left over for storage in fat cells and your weight remains constant. But if your calorie-intake exceeds your calorie-expenditure, the extra calories are stored somewhere on your body and you gain weight. Some fat loss 4 idiots guides, have shown desirable results for the overweight people.

It is also possible to reduce weight without physical workout, but it’s not an ideal option. Because losing weight typically involves losing both, muscle and fat. And as we loss more muscles, the lower our metabolic rate. That is why the best weight loss programs encourage you to reduce your calorie-intake and increase your exercise. Point is, if you make regular calorie savings, they add up to significant weight gain. According to the reviews of fat loss 4 idiots, accelerated metabolic rate is the key factor in fat loss.

Fat storage of body is a critical defense mechanism. The human body has not changed enough since the Stone Age. To enable Stone Age humans to survive periods of food shortage, the human body was designed to store energy which could then be drawn upon in times of famine. Thus for example, people could overeat during the hunting season, or when food was plentiful, and the surplus would be stored as fat tissue. And when food was short, the body would burn the deposited fat as energy.

Weight loss secret

Good nutrition is the basis of lasting weight loss. In order to lose weight we require an efficient metabolic rate and optimum efficiency requires nutritious food.

Calories are important as well. In fact, no matter how nutritious your diet, it won’t help you lose weight if it is too high in calories. But, like nutrition, calories are only part of the story. A low-calorie diet of junk food will not maintain the efficiency of your body or metabolism. As a consequence, before long weight loss will slow down and your health will suffer.

For healthy, lasting weight loss, the secret is to choose a calorie controlled nutritious diet which offers slow, steady weight loss to help you change your eating habits over the long term. Such a diet will help you to lose, about 100 pounds in a year.
