Laser therapy was failed to reduce the stroke disabilities in 660 patients in the initial clinical trial, but significant improvement has been seen in the patients with mild to moderate stroke after laser treatment.

In the U.S. stroke has become the number three cause of causalities and leading cause of the major disabilities and in the experts opinion, need of new treatments is urgent.

Since now, FDA has approved only one drug for the stroke, caused by the blood clot. This clot-busting drug is commonly known as plasminogen activator that must be administered within the three hours of stroke attack, in case of survival.

“There is a need of exceptional treatment for the patient who comes in later than that,” Dr. Justin Zivin, who led the study said.

Scientists used the laser device that emits weak infrared radiation to treat brain on average fourteen hours after the stroke.

After three months, 36 percent of the laser treated patients had no disabilities in comparison to the 31 percent patients, without therapy, but there was no significant difference, researchers said.

It has been noticed that patients have had the mild attack of stroke, 52 percent of them showed mild or no disability when treated with the laser compare to the other 42 percent and showed the statically significant results.

“It gives us lots of encouragement” researcher said

“We are still unaware of the actual mode of action of the laser therapy and the way it helps the patient but what we know that it reduce cell death, increase metabolic rate and increase cell growth.” Zivin said.
